Brekkie Lovers Unite: The Ultimate Guide to the Most Important Meal of the Day

When BA's creative director Alex Grossman and food director Carla Music traveled to Australia to research an upcoming story (stay tuned!), they solidified our staff's obsession with Australian "brekkie" culture. Featuring wholesome, healthy, filling, veggie-forward food, Australian breakfasts are exactly the type of food we love to eat. The beauty of brekkie is in its simplicity and lack of fanfare. Organic, responsibly-grown, and thoughtfully prepared food is just the norm for Aussies. Says Grossman: "It's not like they're telling you all about the house-fermented kimchi and locally-raised eggs." Instead, there's just some dude in the back of the kitchen making ferments because they're cool and tasty, and he likes them, and thinks you will too. "This is a new concept for us; it's not new at all for Australians," says Grossman.

As Grossman explains, the beauty of brekkie-ing it up in Australia is that you don't have to try too hard to find a great spot. They're just there, fermenting kombucha and mashing perfectly ripe avocados on seedy toast. You have a much greater chance of hitting the breakfast jackpot at random in Sydney and Melbourne than in most U.S. cities (although there are some amazing spots in the states, which we highlight below!). Here are some of our picks for Australia's best brekkies:

You needn't fly across the world to have an Australian-style brekkie (although we wouldn't fault you for booking a ticket). A handful of restaurants in the states are serving up a proper brekkie, as well.

Sweedeedee A Portland, OR charmer, Sweedeedee does brekkie culture with a side of pie. In addition to cherry, apple, marionberry, pecan, and lemon pies, Sweedeedee features anadama toast with house-made preserves and local honey, corncakes, and plenty of salads.

Don't feel like dining out? Recreating an Australian brekkie at home is easy, once you're familiar with the elements. Blur the lines between breakfast, brunch, and lunch, embrace whole foods and green things, and above all, keep it fresh and filling, without being heavy.

I can safely say, chorizo brekkie bowls are a huge brunch favorite in our home! They get gobbled up as soon as they come off of the stove. Some nights when we don't know what to make for dinner, we always come around to these! (If you have never had breakfast for dinner, you don't know what you are missing!)

These chorizo brekkie bowls also make a great and delicious option for weekday meal prep! All you have to do is cook all of the ingredients as per the recipe below, and prepare the easy hollandaise sauce. Portion and layer all of the ingredients into containers and keep the hollandaise sauce portions in separate containers.

It's delectable, it's beautiful, it's healthy. They call it brekkie. Yep, the Australians have even nicknamed the best meal of the day, it's that good. The trend hasn't just stayed in Australia, though. Trendy cafés from Amsterdam to NYC have adopted the superfood-y brekkie idea, and for good reason. Avocado toast ("avo smash" as they say), smoothie bowls, yogurt and granola, and always good coffee... The best way to start the day.

The Aussies have clearly created their own breakfast staples, but they've also taken staple breakfast options from around the world and healthy-ed them up. I found what would become without a doubt, the best breakfast, sorry, brekkie, I've ever had at the (actually Kiwi-inspired) best café in Amsterdam, Bakers & Roasters. My friend had a take on the traditional English breakfast and I had a sweet potato and chorizo hash with fried eggs on top. Not your typical full breakfast or potato hash.

Ultimately, one of my favorite aspects of the Australian brekkie scene is the personal experience it provides. While it's impossible to completely bring the laid-back vibe of Australia to the hustle and bustle of New York, this trend is definitely making an impact on how people treat breakfast. Whether it's taking time to enjoy brunch at the café, or getting excited to recreate Aussie favorites in the kitchen, breakfast is a thing. The aim of the Australian inspired café scene is to make eating breakfast an experience to be savored, not rushed. Allowing people to enjoy high quality coffee and tasty, healthy food with good friends, all at the same time, is the goal of these cafés, and at least from the food perspective, they're doing a good job at it.
