To fix that, Dell has launched powerful gaming laptops that can also double up as your daily drivers, and the most interesting part about them is that they don't cost a bomb. From this Gaming series of laptops, we have the Dell G5 15 with us today -- although the non Ryzen CPU version.
Dell's G5 15 is part of a small list of laptops that can truly double up both as productivity and gaming laptops, and that's something which shows through the design of the G5 15. At the first glance, the G5 15 looks like your everyday productivity laptop with a broad frame and clean design. However, once you look closer, there are elements which remind you a little of the older Alienware series of laptops, and also in the process help establish the device as a gaming laptop.
Like many gaming laptops out there, the G5 15 is also a little on the heavier side at slightly under 2.5kgs. However, the weight appears to be spread evenly through the device, which makes carrying it around a little easier. The basic element of the design is plastic, which is used on the backplate and the outside of the laptop. While this does not make the laptop look very premium, it certainly does the job. The design also features two large vents that are used to make sure that the Dell G5 15 keeps running cool.
Once you open up the lid, there's a 15-inch display with support for up to 1080p resolution and 60Hz refresh. While a faster display capable of running a higher resolution would have been preferred, we can understand why Dell chose to go with this particular panel. For gaming, the core configuration of this laptop would not be able to process higher-resolution or more than 60 frames per second on AAA titles. As such, equipping the Dell G5 15 with a more expensive panel would have served no purpose for either the company or the end-user.
As a package, there is very little to fault in the Dell G5 15. For a laptop that starts at a price of around Rs 82,000, the G5 15 does well. While it certainly does not set the world on fire with its amazing feature set or the raw processing power it brings. However, it does offer good value for money and design as well as hardware that's suited for both gaming and productivity tasks, and that's definitely its biggest selling point.
On the Geekbench 4 test, the G5 fell behind the gaming laptop average. It also did worse than the Legion Y730, which has the same CPU but twice the RAM. In contrast, the G5 pulled one over on the GV62 8RE and its lesser Core i5-8300H CPU.
It won't last all day, but the Dell G5 has awfully good battery life for a mobile gaming rig. The 56 Whr battery lasted 6 hours and 17 minutes on our battery test, which browses the web over Wi-Fi. That is almost two hours longer than the average gaming laptop in this price range and embarrasses the Legion Y730 and GV62 8RE.
But the Dell G5 15 can handle moderate workloads and gaming, and its impressive battery life means the fun can continue longer than with many other gaming laptops. Further, you can improve performance on your own by upgrading its components, which Dell makes pleasantly easy. This is a solid starter gaming laptop, but one that's not without its flaws.

Scoring an Alienware 15" gaming laptop equipped with a GTX 1060 for under $1000 brand new is unheard of. This is a slightly older model with a 7th generation Intel Core i5 quad-core processor that will still excel in all games. It's sold by Beach Camera via Walmart. Beach Camera is a very reputable vendor and an authorized reseller of Dell and Alienware hardware.
This is currently the least expensive Intel Core i7-8750H GTX 1060-equipped laptop I could find. It also features a 15" 1080p IPS panel display, 8GB of memory, a 1TB hard drive with 16GB of Optane memory, and a GeForce GTX 1060 3GB video card that should run any game on the 1080p display. The laptop weighs in at only 4.8lbs, which is respectable for a 15" gaming rig, and boasts up to 10 hours of battery life.
Today marks the release of the first RTX video card equipped laptops, and Dell comes out the gate with the lowest price on the absolute best card there is, the RTX 2080. It's available in both the Alienware m15 and Area-51m, but the m15 is nearly $1K less expensive. Newly introduced at CES 2019, the revamped Alienware m15 laptop is much thinner than its predecessor. So today we will be looking at and reviewing Dell's G5 15 gaming laptop to explore its gaming performance and returned frame rates and see if it is up to scratch and worth the price? Towards the end of this article we compare a few laptop variants to see how some of these prices and hardware stack up.
The G5 15 8th generation gaming laptop has got some pretty reasonable specs including a GTX 1660 Ti mobile (it could have the RTX 2060 mobile option, if you fancy), an intel Core i7-9750H processor, an SSD for the boot drive, a 144Hz monitor among other features, and we'll go over the most important specifications in just a minute. The version we received was priced at $1,349.99 (1,149.00) and offers a pretty good price-to-performance.
The 9th generation Intel Core i7-9750H is a top of the line laptop processor. Compared to the top 500 most demanding games (as of Feb 2020) this CPU can run 500 games for the minimum requirements and 484 games for the recommended requirements. This makes it a really good choice for modern gaming.
The GTX 1660 Ti mobile is a pretty solid gaming laptop graphics card, at the time of writing, of today's 500 most demanding games the 1660 Ti Mobile card is capable of running and meeting 495 of the minimum game requirements and 424 of the recommended gaming requirements. This puts the 1660 Ti mobile as a very good laptop GPU choice for playing modern games, as it can play almost every game at the minimal requirements level and most of the recommended.
Whilst 8GB of ram is capable of running most games at a decent level, 16GB of ram will be the way to go if you want to maximise the lifespan of your PC. 8GB is already starting to feel a little too close to minimum game requirement level. While 8GB is fine to get almost all games to run still we highly recommend that you look for laptops and gaming machines that come with 16GB RAM to play today's games reliably.
This is a good size for laptop gaming. Of course you might want to look for 17inch laptops, but the 15inch makes the laptop even more portable. With it coming with a 144Hz screen refresh rate is a good bonus, letting you support higher FPS, should the chosen hardware permit it.
Additionally the Dell G5 15 gaming laptop comes with a Turbo mode which you can enable or disable by pressing the F7 key at any time. Turbo mode essentially boosts your processor's clock speed to the maximum frequency, enabling increased performance. From our tests it didn't really do much other than eliminate stuttering whilst gaming.
