Jan. 28, 2005GoPack.com caught up with All-American Ebony Foster from the women's track & field team last week. The junior sprinter from Lynchburg, Va., is the school record holder in both the 60m hurdles and the 100m hurdles and is the reigning ACC Champion in both events as well. Qualifying for the NCAA Championships in both hurdles last year, Foster was the only collegian to qualify for the finals of the 100m hurdles at the U.S. Olympic Trials last summer.GoPack: How was your winter break?Ebony: It was great. I stayed at home and chilled with Mom and Dad. I worked out a little bit and worked a lot with the kids at my high school.GoPack: You thinking about becoming a coach someday?Ebony: I don't know about coaching. If someone asks me for some help, I give them some advice, that's all.GoPack: What made you decide on NC State?Ebony: It was not too far from home, but not too close either. Plus I liked the school colors. Red and White are my high school colors.GoPack: What are your goals for this season?Ebony: My main goal is to prove everybody wrong at NCAAs. I have never made it to a final at NCAAs.GoPack: But you were the only collegian to qualify for the finals at the Olympic Trials!Ebony: I am still disappointed with my performance at NCAAs though.GoPack: Do you have any siblings?Ebony: I have two older brothers, Damon and Brandon and a stepbrother named Aaron.GoPack: Did they play any college sports?Ebony: No, but they were good at football and soccer in high school.GoPack: What do they do now?Ebony: Damon is a car salesman and Brandon just came out of the Navy.GoPack: Where all has he (Brandon) been?Ebony: All over Europe and Africa.GoPack: Has he been in harm's way?Ebony: (nods her head yes)GoPack: You keep in touch with him often?Ebony: I email him every day.GoPack: Did he bring you back anything from his travels?Ebony: He brought me a blanket, a bag and a purse from Africa and he got my Mom some elephants because she's a Delta.GoPack: What is your favorite food?Ebony: Macaroni and cheese.GoPack: What is your favorite music?Ebony: I like a lot of krunk music. Lil John is what I've got on right now.GoPack: Do you listen to that before your track meets?Ebony: Oh no. I have a whole separate CD for that.GoPack: You listen to that same one before every meet?Ebony: Oh yeah, it's tradition. That's my routine.GoPack: What's on it?Ebony: Lil Jon, Three 6 Mafia, Slim Thug and some others. I listen to that on the bus, during warm-ups and I get focused.GoPack: What classes are you taking this semester?Ebony: Bugs...GoPack: Bugs?Ebony: Yeah, Insects and People. I'm also taking Sociology 305, which is Race and Ethnics. I've got Communication 103, which is Intro to Theater. And I've got History and English too.GoPack: How is Intro to Theater?Ebony: It's okay right now.GoPack: Are you seeing a future in acting?Ebony: No, not at all.GoPack: Is part of your class getting on stage?Ebony: Yes (grimacing)GoPack: Will there be a performance in this class?Ebony: Yes there will be a performance given.GoPack: What will your part be?Ebony: I don't know yet.GoPack: What is your major?Ebony: Sociology.GoPack: What is your favorite class that you've taken at NC State?Ebony: Probably track & field class.GoPack: Track & field class?Ebony: Yes! It was a coaching class.GoPack: Who has the funniest nickname on the team?Ebony: (laughing) Let me think. We had a guy on the team last year named Derrick High. We called him boo-gee.GoPack: How do you spell that?Ebony: Nobody knows. Mainly everybody just goes by the first initial of their first names. I'm E, Adrian is A.GoPack: Do you ever work on anything besides the sprint events?Ebony: I did long jump my freshman year.GoPack: What about any of the throwing events?Ebony: I did in high school. I did quite a lot in high school.GoPack: What else did you do in high school?Ebony: I was a cheerleader. Figure that. All four years.GoPack: When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?Ebony: A Dallas Cowboy cheerleader.A four-year cheerleader in high school, Ebony had aspirations of becoming a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader before finding her calling on the track
GoPack: When did you first start track?Ebony: In eighth grade the track coach came and got me from softball practice.GoPack: So the beginning of your track career was the end of your softball career?Ebony: Yep. I liked stealing bases. That was it though. Didn't like to hit and I didn't like to catch.GoPack: When did you get your tongue pierced?Ebony: Freshman year. I had my belly button pierced my senior year of high school and I got a tattoo last year.GoPack: What are your tattoos?Ebony: A panther and two Chinese symbols.GoPack: What do the Chinese symbols mean?Ebony: Honesty and faithful.GoPack: Have you verified that?Ebony: No! It's kinda hard for me to look at them since they're on my back, but I had a Chinese lady at the hair store look at them once and she didn't know what they meant, so for all I know they might say "I'm stupid" or "tattoos are dumb." It could be that.GoPack: Why a panther?Ebony: Because my Mom always told me that I was sly like a panther.GoPack: Finish this sentence. Nobody knows how much I like to ___Ebony: Sew.GoPack: Really? Where did you learn that?Ebony: Bible study when I was real small.GoPack: What is your most embarrassing moment on the track:Ebony: There is two. One was when I fell doing the hurdles. A couple football players were going across the field to practice. It was Jerricho Cotchery and somebody else. I was trying to wait until the passed before I ran my hurdles. But they stopped and Jerricho said to the other guy, "Watch Ebony." So I get set and take off. My foot gets caught on the third hurdle. You know how when you're falling and you try to balance yourself to keep yourself steady? Didn't happen. I slid from one hurdle to the next on my hands, knees, stomach and basically the entire front side of my body. Those two just walked off. It was so embarrassing. The other one was when I was running with Felicia and Julia and I said something like "Look at Coach Reese's afro." I was pointing and not paying attention to what I was doing. You know those pants that zip up the sides? I stepped on it and I was trying to grab Felicia to keep myself from falling and I ended up splitting my pants all the way up. Cool points on that one.GoPack: What is your favorite track meet?Ebony: I love the Penn Relays. It's like track really gets attention. It's like a football game. It's everywhere. It's a really big deal ... That and the NCAAs.GoPack: If you could switch places for a day with anyone, who would you pick?Ebony: Bill Gates ... so I could have all that dough.GoPack: Do you have any other superstitious rituals that you do before every meet besides listening to your warm-up CD?Ebony: We always warm up together and I never run in socks.GoPack: What do you do when you're not in class, at practice, studying or sleeping?Ebony: Shop. I love clothes.GoPack: Where is your favorite place on campus?Ebony: There's a little area where it is real quite. There's a fountain and little benches around it. It's a nice place to relax. I don't know what it's called, but it's behind those three buildings on Hillsborough Street.GoPack: If you had to give up all of your possessions but one, what would it be?Ebony: My Bible.GoPack: What is your favorite Coach Reese quote?Ebony: (laughing) Coach Reese is a character! "I'm going to break you off, joker." He doesn't cuss, so joker is it. And he sounds like Mr. T when he says it.GoPack: Who has influenced you the most in your life?Ebony: My mother, Joyce Foster. Track-wise probably Gail. She has goal and she's going to get it.GoPack: Who is the funniest person on the team?Ebony: Either Adrian, Julia or Matt Minnick.GoPack: Which teammate is most likely to become a head coach someday?Ebony: (laughing) Courtney Patterson or Trellanie Green. At practice they ask every question that needs to be asked and are always telling people what they did right and wrong.GoPack: If you could be on a reality TV show, which one would you choose?Ebony: (without hesitation) Survivor. I'd eat anything and everything!GoPack: If you could be on any magazine cover, which one would you choose?Ebony: The Source ... Maxim (laughing)GoPack: What event in history would you have liked to have witnessed?Ebony: Just watch, or would I have to had been a part of it? Because I would say the Civil Rights, but I wouldn't have made it if I would have had to lived through it.GoPack: What is your all-time greatest Christmas present that you've received?Ebony: It was this pink bike. I was about seven and it had the little streamers.GoPack: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?Ebony: By that time I'll be out of the game, so I'll married with a couple kids and a couple gold medals. I also want to have a business, like an adopted childcare center. I was adopted and I want to help other kids too.GoPack: Thank you Ebony, that was great. Good luck this spring.Keep an eye on GoPack.com for more Q&A sessions with Wolfpack student-athletes.Print Friendly Version var obj = "start":0,"count":10,"name":"story-template-boilerplate","sport_id":null,"count_breakpoints":null,"css_class":"","pinned_id":"","extra":,"context":null,"dummy":false,"type":"ads","id":"eaf71b48-ee03-4989-b8df-069634b6ad79","data":"location":"id":0,"title":null,"type":null,"effect":null,"fixed_image_sizes":false,"excluded_sport_ids":null,"slick":false,"dfp":false,"sidearm_dfp":false,"common_page":false,"html_template":null,"name":null,"autoplay_speed":0,"accessibility_icons":false,"sizes":null,"slick_options":null,"dfp_sizes":null,"campaigns":[],"content_id":null,"content_title":null,"content_date":null,"content_url":null,"content_image_url":null,"mode":"web"; if (!("sidearmComponents" in window)) window.sidearmComponents = []; window.sidearmComponents.push(obj); Related Stories and Videos var obj = "start":0,"count":10,"name":"story-template-general-2-1","sport_id":null,"count_breakpoints":null,"css_class":"","pinned_id":"","extra":,"context":null,"dummy":false,"type":"ads","id":"898d521c-ccd4-416f-afcf-cbedecb9a3f0","data":"location":"id":48,"title":"Story Templates - General 2 - Location 1","type":"dfp","effect":"none","fixed_image_sizes":true,"excluded_sport_ids":[],"slick":false,"dfp":true,"sidearm_dfp":false,"common_page":true,"html_template":null,"name":"story-template-general-2-1","autoplay_speed":8,"accessibility_icons":false,"sizes":null,"slick_options":null,"dfp_sizes":["id":17,"enabled":true,"breakpoint":0,"width":300,"height":250,"size_list":"","unit_name":"/29658103/ncsu","sidearm_dfp":null],"campaigns":null,"content_id":"story-template-general-2-1","content_title":"story-template-general-2-1","content_date":null,"content_url":null,"content_image_url":null,"mode":"web"; if (!("sidearmComponents" in window)) window.sidearmComponents = []; window.sidearmComponents.push(obj); Related Stories 02.04.23
